The finished piece

A scarf is a rectangle, so the pattern is mostly a question of length, width and how the ends are finished. Set the finished length and width, and choose a double-turn hem or a pulled-thread fringe at the ends.

Or sew it into a continuous loop for an infinity scarf: the length then becomes the circumference of the loop.

Cutting list

At the starting size (Finished length / loop circumference 170 cm (66⅞″), Finished flat width 28 cm (11″)) the pattern has these pieces. Fabric sizes include seam allowance, interfacing is cut to the stitching line, and pieces cut on the fold are shown opened out. Each size is the width and height of the piece as cut.

How it goes together

These are the maker’s own instructions at the starting size. They change with the options you pick, and the PDF carries the full set with the cover, cutting list and materials list.

  1. Cut the scarf to the cutting-list size. The solid outline already includes the edge-specific hems, fringe allowance or tube seams; transfer the fold label if making a loop.
  2. Turn both long edges 1 cm to the wrong side twice. Press and stitch close to the inner folds.
  3. Turn both short edges 1 cm to the wrong side twice, enclosing the long-edge hem ends. Mitre or trim the bulky corners, then stitch close to the inner folds. The finished scarf is 170 × 28 cm.

Fabric suggestions

Outer: Soft linen, cotton voile, lawn, gauze or another fabric that drapes comfortably. Choose a woven cloth that frays cleanly for fringed ends.

Lining: One fabric layer; the infinity style folds into a double layer.

Interfacing, padding or other layers: No interfacing is needed for a soft scarf.

How each fabric family suits it

The maker’s advice adjusts to the fabric family you pick in the Fabric tab.

Printing it

At the starting size the printed pieces take 14 A4 pages, taped together using the page labels, alignment marks and page map. For a print shop, choose a sheet from A0 to a 36″ roll: the pieces are packed onto as few sheets as they will fit on, and if one is too big for the sheet the maker says so. Every piece here is a rectangle or a strip, so the cutting list above is enough and you can skip printing. How printing, tiling and the test square work.

Frequently asked questions

What size can I make?

The scarf pattern takes finished length / loop circumference from 70–220 cm (27½–86⅝″); finished flat width from 12–45 cm (4¾–17¾″). It starts at Finished length / loop circumference 170 cm (66⅞″), Finished flat width 28 cm (11″), and you can work in centimetres, millimetres or inches. There are 3 starting points to begin from (Everyday straight scarf, Infinity scarf, Fringed scarf). Every starting point stays fully editable.

Which fabric suits the scarf pattern?

Soft linen, cotton voile, lawn, gauze or another fabric that drapes comfortably. Choose a woven cloth that frays cleanly for fringed ends. In the maker’s fabric advice, stable woven is a great choice; heavy or stiff, stretchy knit and slippery or fine are possible with care.
