Coaster Pattern Maker
Coasters are a good use for scraps. Choose round or a rounded square and set the size.
Finish the edge turned and topstitched or bound with bias binding, and add quilting lines and a fleece layer if you like a little padding.

Cutting list
At the starting size (Finished diameter / side 10 cm (3⅞″)) the pattern has these pieces. Fabric sizes include seam allowance, interfacing is cut to the stitching line, and pieces cut on the fold are shown opened out. Each size is the width and height of the piece as cut.
| Piece | Fabric | Cut | Size to cut | How |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Round coaster | Main fabric | 1 | up to 12 × 12 cm (up to ≈4¾ × ≈4¾″) | Shaped: cut from the printed piece |
| Round coaster | Lining | 1 | up to 12 × 12 cm (up to ≈4¾ × ≈4¾″) | Shaped: cut from the printed piece |
| Round coaster | Interfacing | 1 | up to 10 × 10 cm (up to ≈3⅞ × ≈3⅞″) | Shaped: cut from the printed piece |
You will also need: Thread. The cover page and materials list give the amounts for your size.
The maker’s fabric estimate at this size: Main fabric about 0.2 m of 112 cm fabric; Lining about 0.2 m of 112 cm fabric.
How it goes together
These are the maker’s own instructions at the starting size. They change with the options you pick, and the PDF carries the full set with the cover, cutting list and materials list.
- Cut the front and back on the solid outline. Cut the optional fleece to the stitching line. For a bound edge, cut the listed bias strip; the body has no extra perimeter seam allowance.
- Fuse the fleece to the wrong side of the front, keeping it clear of the turned-edge allowance. Follow its heat instructions and test a scrap first.
- Stitch the two marked quilting lines through the front and fleece before assembling the coaster.
- Place front and back right sides together. Sew around the perimeter at 1 cm, leaving the 4.5 cm gap between the notches. Clip the curved allowance or trim the square corners without cutting the seam.
- Turn through the gap, smooth the edge and press flat. Turn the gap allowances inward and topstitch around the entire edge to close it.
Fabric suggestions
Outer: Quilting cotton, linen or another stable washable woven fabric.
Lining: Use a second fabric layer for the backing; it can contrast with the front.
Interfacing, padding or other layers: Optional fusible fleece between the layers gives a little padding. Test the iron temperature on a scrap.
How each fabric family suits it
- Stable woven: great choice. Keeps the small shape and binding even.
- Heavy or stiff: possible, with care. A thick fabric plus fleece may be bulky at the edge; reduce the layers if needed.
- Stretchy knit: not recommended. The small coaster can curl or stretch out of shape.
- Slippery or fine: possible, with care. Baste the layers and binding so they do not shift.
The maker’s advice adjusts to the fabric family you pick in the Fabric tab.
Printing it
At the starting size the printed pieces take 1 A4 page, taped together using the page labels, alignment marks and page map. For a print shop, choose a sheet from A0 to a 36″ roll: the pieces are packed onto as few sheets as they will fit on, and if one is too big for the sheet the maker says so. How printing, tiling and the test square work.
