Boxed corners turn a flat pouch into one that stands up, but working out the corner cut-outs for a new size is where most people get stuck. Here the cut-outs are part of the printed pattern, drawn to the size your depth needs.

Give the finished width of the base, the height and the depth. The pattern adds half the depth to the height and the full depth to the width, cuts a square of half the depth from each bottom corner, and gives you the zip length and the steps to sew it.

Make it yours: This is a starting point. Change the size, proportions, pockets, closures, strap or handle lengths and other details to suit how you will use it, and measure the item (or yourself) it is for. If you are unsure, sew a quick mock-up in scrap fabric first. Change the size and depth to fit what it will hold, and the zip, corners, lining and handle loop.

Who it's for

How it works

  1. Type the finished width, height and depth
  2. Choose a bottom seam or one piece cut on the fold, zip tabs and lining
  3. Print the pattern, check the test square, and cut the corner squares out with the rest
  4. Sew the zip, the sides and the base, then pinch each corner flat and sew straight across

Frequently asked questions

How big are the corner cut-outs?

With a bottom seam, each cut-out is a square half the depth along each side, measured from the cut edges, whatever seam allowance you use. The pattern draws it, so there is nothing to measure.

Why does the panel look wider than my pouch?

The base takes up some of each panel: the depth comes from the panel’s width and half of it from the height. That is why a 22 × 14 × 10 cm pouch has panels 32 cm wide.

Does it need interfacing?

For a pouch that holds its shape, yes: fusible fleece or a medium interfacing on the outer pieces. Stiff fabrics like canvas, cork or faux leather can go without.
