Tote Bag Pattern Maker
A tote is simple to sew and hard to size: the bag that fits a laptop, a week’s shopping or a stack of library books is never the one in the pattern.
Type the width, height and depth you want, and the handle length. The pattern places the handles, sizes and positions a pocket, marks a snap, and tells you how much fabric to buy at 112 or 150 cm wide.
Make it yours: This is a starting point. Change the size, proportions, pockets, closures, strap or handle lengths and other details to suit how you will use it, and measure the item (or yourself) it is for. If you are unsure, sew a quick mock-up in scrap fabric first. Change the width, height, depth, the top (open, drawstring, roll-top, zip), the handle length and the pockets.

Frequently asked questions
How long should tote handles be?
About 60 cm (24″) of handle goes over a shoulder; 35–45 cm (14–18″) is for carrying by hand. The length you set is the part that shows.
Which fabric works best?
Canvas, duck, denim or heavy linen on the outside, quilting cotton for the lining. A light cotton outer needs interfacing to carry weight. Stretch fabrics aren’t suited to totes.
Can I print it at a copy shop?
Yes. Choose Print shop and an A0, A1, A2, 24 × 36″ or 36″ roll sheet: all the pieces are laid out on as few big sheets as possible, with a test square.
