The finished piece

A zip pouch is the classic first sewing project, and the one most often wanted in a size no pattern comes in: a case for a particular set of pens, a pouch that fits one drawer, a cover for a charger and its cable.

Type the finished width and height you want. The pattern works out the panels for you, adds your seam allowance, allows for the strip of zip that shows at the top, and gives you a cutting list, the zip length to buy, and instructions written for exactly the options you chose.

Make it yours: This is a starting point. Change the size, proportions, pockets, closures, strap or handle lengths and other details to suit how you will use it, and measure the item (or yourself) it is for. If you are unsure, sew a quick mock-up in scrap fabric first. Change the size to fit what it will hold, the closure, the corners, the lining and the strap.

Who it's for

How it works

  1. Type the finished width and height, and pick square or rounded corners
  2. Choose a zip, a flap with a snap or button, or an open top, and whether to line it
  3. Print the pattern at 100% and check the test square, or cut the rectangles straight from the cutting list
  4. Sew it following the instructions, which change with the options you picked

Frequently asked questions

How long should the zip be?

Without zip tabs, use a zip at least 5 cm (2″) longer than the pouch is wide; the extra is cut off after the side seams are sewn. With tabs, the zip is shorter than the pouch by the two tabs, and the pattern gives the exact length.

Does the height include the zip?

Yes. The finished height is measured from the bottom to the middle of the zip, and the panels are cut shorter by the strip of zip that shows, so the pouch comes out the size you typed.

Can I print it without seam allowance?

Yes. Turn the seam allowance off and the pattern shows only the stitching line; the cutting list still gives sizes with the allowance added.
