The finished piece

Slipper socks are a sewn sole and two side pieces, made from fleece or a thick knit. Choose a size or enter the foot length and ankle, and set the toe room and foot width.

Add a folded or hemmed cuff, a lining, and a sole cut from non-slip fabric or from the same fabric with grip dots.

Make it yours: Measure your own foot, then change the length, the ankle and the sole.

How it goes together

These are the maker’s own instructions at the starting size. They change with the options you pick, and the PDF carries the full set with the cover, cutting list and materials list.

  1. Check the stretch before cutting: the top of the leg is 25 cm round (22.5 cm ankle + 2.5 cm ease), and has to stretch over your heel. Wrap the knit round your heel and instep at that length to be sure.
  2. Cut the side pieces as mirror pairs: two with the pattern face up and two face down, so each sock has a left and a right side.
  3. Sew each sock’s two side pieces right sides together along the front edge (over the toes) and along the back edge (heel and leg) at 1 cm, with a stretch stitch. Notch the curves.
  4. Sew in the sole: with the upper wrong side out, pin the sole’s toe notch to the front seam and its heel notch to the back seam, then the notches between. Sew round at 1 cm with the upper on top, easing it round the toe and heel. Sew again just inside the allowance for strength.
  5. Turn the socks right side out.
  6. Cuffs: fold each cuff right sides together, short ends meeting, and sew the ends at 1 cm to make a ring. Fold it in half lengthwise, wrong sides together, raw edges level. Mark quarters on the cuff and on the top edge (the two seams and halfway between).
  7. Pull the cuff over the top of the sock, raw edges level, its seam at the back seam, quarters matching. Sew at 1 cm with a stretch stitch, stretching the cuff to fit. Press the seam down.
  8. Try them on: the toe should have about 1 cm to spare and the heel sit in the heel curve.

Fabric suggestions

Outer: Polar fleece, sherpa, sweater knit or a thick jersey.

Lining: Thin fleece or jersey; sherpa for extra warmth.

Interfacing, padding or other layers: No interfacing. Cut the soles from a non-slip fabric (a knit or faux suede with a grippy backing or printed dots).

How each fabric family suits it

The maker’s advice adjusts to the fabric family you pick in the Fabric tab.

Printing it

At the starting size the printed pieces take 3 A4 pages, taped together using the page labels, alignment marks and page map. For a print shop, choose a sheet from A0 to a 36″ roll: the pieces are packed onto as few sheets as they will fit on, and if one is too big for the sheet the maker says so. How printing, tiling and the test square work.

Frequently asked questions

What size can I make?

The slipper socks pattern takes leg height from 7–35 cm (2¾–13¾″); cuff depth from 1–10 cm (⅜–3⅞″). It starts at Leg height 16 cm (6¼″), Cuff depth 4 cm (1⅝″), and you can work in centimetres, millimetres or inches. There are 10 starting points to begin from (Adult M, Adult S, Adult L, Adult XL, Lined slipper socks · adult M, Ankle slippers · adult M, Child 1–2 years, Child 3–4 years, Child 5–6 years, Baby 6–12 months). Every starting point stays fully editable.

Which fabric suits the slipper socks pattern?

Polar fleece, sherpa, sweater knit or a thick jersey. In the maker’s fabric advice, stretchy knit is a great choice; heavy or stiff is possible with care; stable woven and slippery or fine are not recommended.

Are there child or baby sizes?

Yes: Child 1–2 years (foot 13.5 cm · ankle 13.5 cm + 2.5 cm · 10 cm high), Child 3–4 years (foot 16 cm · ankle 15 cm + 2.5 cm · 11.5 cm high), Child 5–6 years (foot 18 cm · ankle 16.5 cm + 2.5 cm · 12.5 cm high) and Baby 6–12 months (foot 11.5 cm · ankle 12 cm + 2.5 cm · 8 cm high). They are starting points, not a promise of fit, and every measurement can be changed. Check the fit yourself, and check the finished item for anything small, loose or long enough to catch, before a child wears or uses it.
